Job Satisfaction

The idea of job satisfaction has been argued in several ways by various scholars, practitioners and researchers. Job satisfaction depends on individual perceptions and feeling towards working environment, management and co-workers. Therefore, due to different perceptions among different people, job satisfaction has no specific definition. However, most scholars describe job satisfaction as the positive or pleasurable emotional condition resulting experience or personal job appraisal.

In other words, job satisfaction is an individual gratification within someone’s job. The assessment of job satisfaction is done at both global level; overall job, and facet level; individual aspects. There are several facets which are used to determine individual job satisfaction which includes communication, appreciation, fringe benefits, coworkers, organization, job conditions, recognition, conditions of the job, promotion opportunities, supervision, nature of the job and job security.

Job Satisfaction and Individual Responses

In most recent approach to the concept of job satisfaction revealed that job satisfaction involve multidimensional personal responses to the job of an individual. These individual responses involve evaluative, behavioral and affective components. Affective job satisfaction represents people feelings towards their job and thus it reflects to the extent of happiness or pleasure in general persuade.

Cognitive job satisfaction on the other hand involves various logical and objective evaluation job facets. However, cognitive job satisfaction can either be one-dimension; where it involves single job facet such as maternity leave or payments, or multidimensional; where various job facet are simultaneously involved in the evaluation.

Unlike affective job satisfaction, cognitive job satisfaction does not evaluate the extent of the happiness or pleasure which develops from the particular facets of the job, but instead evaluates the degree to which those facets of the job are perceived to be satisfactory by the holders of the job. Although cognitive job satisfaction could help to reveal affective job satisfaction, the two concepts are discrete, though not necessary related directly, and have various consequences and background.

Job Satisfaction and Personal Conditions

Taking into consideration of the quality of person working life, or issues that influence working experience of a person, job satisfaction can be viewed on a wider perspective. Individual situations such as working stress, home-work interface, conditions of the work and job supervision can great influence personal perceptions on job satisfaction or the degree of satisfaction in a certain job.

Individuals gender factors play significant role in evaluating personal job satisfaction facets. Men tend to have higher job satisfactions facets compared to women. Women are believed to love their jobs if they acquire what they perceive as significant aspect of a good job.
